Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters

Lots of fun at the Open Day!

After months of planning our open day (in association with the Open Garden Squares Weekend) finally arrived on 14th June.  We had a few light showers but it didn't dampen the spirits of the local families who came to have a great time building and painting bird boxes, running around finding clues for the treasure hunt and helping us to finish the insect hotel.  Roberta very kindly came and ran the upcycling stall where children could make pretty things out of unwanted every day items.  We also had a Tai Chi session which went down very well with lots of the volunteers and some beautiful music from Musica Medioca.  We also managed to finish planting our bog garden which looks fantastic and really adds some colour and hopefully wildlife in the future.  The tea and cakes went down well with the added bonus of Pimms this year!  We even appeared in the Newshopper!

Bog Garden

We want to say a big THANK YOU to Capital Clean-up for awarding us the funds to create our beautiful bog garden.  The money has gone to create a semi watertight bog area with many different varieties of native bog plants that will hopefully encourage local wildlife to find a home in this urban environment.

Dave's Walk

One of our volunteers, Dave, is raising money for the gardens by walking the Penine Way.  He is well on his way to finishing so well done and thank you Dave!  You can still donate at www.gogetfunding/project/daveswalk.

We wish him all the best and hope that the blisters are not too sore!

Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters

One Week to the Open Day!

It's one week to go before our annual open day and we've been beavering away getting the garden ready for our visitors on 14th June.  We've been shifting bags and bags of topsoil into the bog garden in readiness for the plants to arrive.  We've been nurturing our seedlings in the greenhouse into young plants so they look their best to sell on the day (snails go away!)   And we've been weeding borders and planting out new plants bought with funds from the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association.

The garden is really blooming now and should look very colourful for the big day.

Our programme for the day is as follows -

11 am Gardens open
Throughout the day come and join in -
Making bird feeders
Making and Painting bird boxes
Making an insect hotel
Making bags and photo frames from re-cycled materials
A treasure hunt and wishing tree
Face painting
Plant Sale and Hydroponics demonstration
Homemade cakes and refreshments in the Beer tent
11.30 am Tai Chi ‘taster’ sessions
1.30 pm Live music from Musica Medioca ensemble
2.30 pm Planting up the bog garden
4pm Gardens close

So come along and see what we've been up to.  Maybe do a little Tai Chi and then reward yourself with some cake or even a beer from a local brewery whilst you listen to a little music!

Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters

 All Hands on Deck!!!

We have a very exciting and hectic couple of weeks ahead of us and we feel like we're racing to the finish line.  On Saturday 14th June we will be holding our annual open day in conjunction with The Open Garden Squares Weekend.   We have been preparing since the early spring, sowing seeds for our plant sale and making bird boxes for children to decorate.  We are now reaching the final stages and the plants are looking great.  We took cuttings from the roses and they are also doing well.  Our task now is to make the garden looks its best for our guests on the 14th.

Ready, Steady, Go Bog Garden!

Our exciting new project is well under way and we spent last Wednesday moving tons of sand, gravel and top soil over to the old pond/ new bog garden area.  With a lot of effort we got it all in place and this week we await another delivery of topsoil to fill it up completely so that we can start planting before our open day.  We hope to get some large plants in and then leave the smaller peripheral planting to anybody that would like to help on the open day.

Here is how it is taking shape -

The pond area was first cleared of overhanging plants then a layer of sand was added.  An underlay and then a plastic membrane was put over the top.

We put a soaker hose on top of the sand which has holes in it and will water the garden from underneath.  We then buried it in gravel and added the first layer of topsoil.

We had a great day doing this and hopefully we can get this finished next week.

Award from Metropolitan Public Gardens Assiation

Thanks to our chairperson Brenda's hard work we have been awarded funding from the MPGA for buying plants to populate the Croydon Road end of Winsford Gardens borders with Shrubs and perennials which will hopefully create a colourful and established look to the border.  We had a fun morning looking around The Secret Garden nursery in Crystal Palace picking out what we wanted.  It should bring some real colour to that area in time for the open day.

Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters

 Happy Birthday

Penge Green Gym!

At the beginning of April Penge Green Gym celebrated it's first whole year as an independent community group, looking after Winsford gardens for the community and the environment.  Some very tasty cakes were brought as a special treat for our tea break.  Lizzy Kaimakamis and Julie Royce from TCV joined us for the day, with some rose bed weeding and cake eating!  We were also joined by some members of 'Men in sheds' who were interested to see our work at Winsford Gardens.  We hope to collaborate with them in the future.

The gardens are blooming and the recently planted seedlings are busting out all over!

We've already planted carrots, leeks, radish, potatoes and lettuce.  We hope to have a lovely display for our open day on 14th June.  The greenhouse is also overflowing with seedlings, many who have now graduated to the cold frame.  We have a continuing battle with the slugs and snails who love the tender plants so we are ever vigilante!
